Do you know the recommended length to stay away if you encounter a snake in the wild?...if you guessed 6 feet, you are correct! In most cases, a snake can strike up to a distance between 1/3 to 1/2 of its body length. For example, if the 🐍 is four feet in length, its strike can likely reach no more than two feet. Make sure to stay at minimum 6 feet apart much like the current conditions during this pandemic. Leave 🐍 alone! Do not handle, tease, or harass. Photo 2: Juvenile Southern Pacific rattle snake at @cuyamacaranchosp Photo 3: Spotted leaf-nosed snake at Ocotillo Wells SVRA Sssssssnake facts: They are cold-blooded and must move to a suitable surrounding environment to regulate their body temperature. They can't survive extreme summer heat for more than 10-20 minutes and are rarely found in the open. They hibernate in the winter and may also be inactive periodically during hot summer weather. Most 🐍 that you may encounter are not poisonous. #WildlifeWednesday #CAStateParks #SaferAtSixFeet #snakes

Coyotes are nocturnal predators but can occasionally be seen during daylight hours. They are less likely to form packs than are wolves, so they usually hunt individually, in pairs or small family groups…. these guys don’t congregate in large groups. Not a bad tip during the current situation. They are also resourceful, capable of digging their own burrows, but they often enlarge the burrows of woodchucks or badgers to use for their dens. Recently, they were spotted at @henrycowellredwoods.sp #WildlifeWednesday #CAStateParks #henrycowellredwoodsstatepark #coyotes #StayHomeSaveLives
As our weather warms up, a reminder to all Californians during #COVID19 - enjoy the outdoors in your neighborhood, don’t drive to parks and beaches, walk to open neighborhood parks and don’t congregate. Please leave if you cannot practice physical distancing. #StayHomeSaveLives
