This Friday, Ahmaud Arbery would have celebrated his 26th birthday. Instead, people all over the world are honoring the Georgia man's life by jogging 2.23 miles, a distance symbolic of the date Arbery was fatally shot and killed while running. On February 23, 2020, former police officer Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis McMichael, who were armed, chased Arbery down. The men later told police that they thought he looked like the suspect in a series of recent break-ins in the area. No such string of crimes was reported in the weeks preceding the shooting, a police lieutenant told CNN. Arbery was shot after struggling with the son over his shotgun, according to a Glynn County Police report. On Thursday, Gregory and Travis McMichael were arrested and face murder and aggravated assault charges, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
