Studio 189's Posts

PRESS // Studio 189 featured in @essence for our creative hairstyles that celebrated the individuality and uniqueness of each model. Ursula Stephen was the @TREsemme lead hairstylist for Studio 189. And it’s thank to TREsemme that we were able to do so many incredible styles. • “And if the hair wasn’t fun enough, the runway show to spotlight it was like a big party in Lagos, or Accra, or Bamako, or Ouagadougou. Erwiah’s West African background shined through in every way, from the prints in the clothing to the representation of the models. It’s a beautiful thing when Black hair in its natural state and any other forms it takes on can be celebrated and highlighted as aspirational beauty.” • “That’s what I love about natural hair. You can do so many cool shapes and just have fun with it. You can never get bored with creating shapes. {For this show} I’m keeping the cultural aspect of the collection with the hair, and keeping it high fashion.” Says Ursula •

PRESS // British Vogue published a beautiful multi page story (in print 🙌🏾) featuring Studio 189 in the October issue in honor of “the year of return”. Model @binxwalton was Photographed in Accra, Ghana Styled by @poppykain 📷 Juergen Teller featuring local Ghanaian brands such as @studiooneeightynine @christiebrowngh @_otteng @hazzaofficiale and many many more... as well as international brands. What a gorgeous tribute to 🇬🇭. • British Vogue Editor in Chief @edward_enninful writes “model Binx Walton travels with photographer Juergen Teller to Ghana. As an African-American on her first trip to the African continent, Binx shows how, for many of us, the concept of home is multifaceted – and that roots matter.” #fashionrising #studio189 • 🙏🏾🇬🇭💚 @britishvogue

This is a First Look at the new Mwabindo school built in Zambia. The school was Designed by @selldorfarchitects and the uniforms were designed and produced by @studiooneeightynine . The school opened in May and served around 250 students from pre-school to 7th grade, with a curriculum supplemented by arts and Montessori-based programs. Yesterday we had the pleasure of presenting an edit of our spring 2020 collection in Lagos @lagosfashionweekofficial . It’s particularly always fulfilling to be here because we get the opportunity to bring our team from Ghana who work behind the scenes and never get to see the magic that happens in NY. And we get to collaborate with our team here in Nigeria as well to make it happen. Thank you to @omoyemiakerele for your endless dedication to the development of african fashion. 📷 Kola Oshalusi • special thanks to Ngaa, Johnny, Isaac, Ann, Helen #fashionrising #studio189
@cynthiaerivo wears an outfit from our most recent spring collection in her BET trailer for her new “Harriet” movie where she plays Harriet Tubman. As daughters of Africa and descendants of the slave trade, tracing the journey of where we come from is very significant for us. In our most recent spring 2020 collection we used a lot of symbolism and techniques from west africa as well as from “freedom blankets” from America. We believe that the work we are doing is very much guided by something greater than us and that our ancestors are watching over us and helping to lead us on our journey. We as well strive to help lay the foundation for future generations. The outfit Cynthia is wearing has been hand-dyed and hand-woven in Burkina Faso and cut / sewn in Ghana. So many hands and so many stories are interwoven in each thread. It’s just so spectacular that we get to be a small part of this film thanks to @cynthiaerivo and thanks to the beautiful styling by @adesamuel assisted by Amirah Jones. We are so proud of you Cynthia. We are so incredibly honored. #fashionrising #studio189
